Martyn Bates (Eyeless in Gaza)

Eyeless In Gaza’s Martyn Bates has, since the early 1980s, been pivotal in the development of new and innovative music. With Peter Becker as Eyeless in Gaza , and in his solo work, he began his explorations into experimental folk music at a time when synthetic and pomp-rock music were the prevailing genres. Traditional music was generally ignored at best and often despised; it was therefore, quite a jump for Bates to start his work with the old traditional songs and stories adapted in new avant-garde settings. During the 1990s he started also to work with former World Serpent instigator Alan Trench, the leader of a mysterious band called ‘Orchis’ - as a new band called ‘12000 Days’. Since this time Martyn has used these three routes, Eyeless In Gaza, solo and 12000 Days as his creative outlets. Other important collaborations include`Murder Ballads' trilogy, with ambient master Mick Harris ( Lull/Scorn), `Just After Sunset', a musical setting of Rilke with the poetess Anne Clark, `Like a Child Dancing in the Wind', a musical setting of the poems of WB Yeats with German drone artists Troum - and the setting of the complete song-cycle of James Joyce's Chamber Music for the Sub Rosa label.
Bates also runs the doggedly independent Ambivalent Scale Recordings, issuing a series of albums that have seen fresh, re-envigorated solo work from Bates, reaching new heights on the just issued I Said To Love cd.
On June 16th Martyn Bates will be performing a mainly acoustic set of old and new material from the both his solo repertoire and Eyeless in Gaza material, accompanied by banjo playing chanteuse Elizabeth S. and Alan Trench (electric guitar) .

Stay tuned for more details.
