Cutting loose is the preserve of youth, right? How many couples do you know who, in their fifties, get made redundant, take to the road in a VW camper and turn to making music for a living?
Scots/English duo Winter Wilson did just that. Having played the UK folk circuit part time for many years, Winter Wilson took the plunge in 2012 and went full time. Travelling the length and breadth of Europe and now much further afield they have not only built a reputation for great songs, stunning harmonies and lots of fun, but their albums have also received great reviews. But it’s in live performance that they really excel, bringing a sense of intimacy to every stage, welcoming audiences into their world, and mixing songs with (often outrageously funny) stories of life on the road.
Dave Wilson (vocals, guitar, banjo) is widely recognised as being in the very top tier of British songwriters, with his songs covered by some of folk’s “greats” (including Vin Garbutt). Kip Winter (vocals, accordion, flute, guitar) has one of the finest voices on the folk scene, expressing power and emotion in equal measure. As one promoter described it “from melting to belting”, she does it.
This their first visit to Australia & New Zealand sees them showcasing their latest album Ashes & Dust, the follow up to the redundancy-inspired Cutting Free. It was Cutting Free’s selection by the UK’s Daily Telegraph for their “top ten recommended folk albums of summer 2014” which promoted Winter Wilson to the major league.
They have now established their own cottage (or campervan!) industry. Kip does the press, designs posters, album covers, tee-shirts etc and takes care of European bookings (she speaks several languages), while Dave writes the songs, engineers the recordings and sorts out all of the rest of the bookings. Thankfully they both drive!
